One of my favorite aspects of Reiki is that is predominantly hands-off. I find that a hands-off healing modality is often more accessible to people since it is less inherently vulnerable, and allows clients to tune into themselves on a very subtle level - a level that contains important information for our self-awareness, healing, and growth. At the same time, touch is incredibly impactful for healing, and this is where I also deeply appreciate the hand-on opportunities in Reiki. But to take things further in a way that empowers the client, I incorporate somatic practices into our sessions learned from my studies with The Embody Lab and a decade of experience engaging the body. This brings in another layer of engagement, allowing us to set the stage for healing so we can shift energy more effectively, all while giving you tools to take with you. Here’s how somatic practices enhance and complement the flow of Reiki energy during a session with me.

What Are Somatic Practices?

Somatic practices are techniques that focus on body awareness, often tapping into the connection between physical sensations and emotional states. They help us tune into what our body is holding—be it stress, tension, or even joy—so we can release, process, and realign. These methods gently invite you to listen to your body, release tension, and promote presence and pleasure.

Bringing Somatic Practices together with Reiki

When you come for a Reiki session with me, we start with the body. Before you get on the table, I’ll guide you through gentle somatic practices. This might look like engaging your sense of touch with diverse textures, tapping, shaking, or self-massage to name a few. We'll work together to find practices that work well for you, with an awareness that what works can change from day to day. This helps ease any tension and brings you into the present moment, setting the stage for a deeper and more receptive energy-healing experience.

How Somatic Practices Fit In to our Reiki Session

Throughout the session, somatic practices weave into the flow of Reiki in a way that feels natural and intuitive:

Grounding Movements: If you arrive feeling overwhelmed or disconnected, I may begin with simple tapping or gentle stretches to help settle your nervous system. This activates a sense of safety and calm, which is essential for effective energy work.

Breath Awareness: I will guide you to connect with your breath, using practices like diaphragmatic breathing to deepen your relaxation and release tension. The breath becomes an anchor, helping the body fully receive Reiki’s healing energy.

Somatic Awareness Prompts: During the session, I might ask you to notice physical sensations, such as warmth, stiffness, or relaxation. These moments of awareness help you stay connected to your experience and invite your body to process energy shifts more consciously.

Together, Reiki and Somatic practices address both the energetic and physical layers of healing. This integrative approach helps release energy that may be “stuck” in the body, allowing you to feel freer.

If emotions arise during a session, somatic grounding techniques ensure you feel supported and connected rather than overwhelmed.

Healing is not a one-size-fits-all experience. By integrating somatic practices into Reiki, I ensure that your session is dynamic and grounded, meeting you where you are—emotionally, energetically, and physically. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, emotional release, or deeper self-awareness, this holistic approach offers something truly transformative.
